Aetna HSA Plans
Aetna HSA plans are a health savings account that lets you pay for qualified medical expenses with tax-advantaged funds. In other words, it is like having a personal savings account for your health.
Couple that with the built in tax-advantages and you have a great health insurance plan. For example, when you put money into your plan, you reduce your taxable income thereby saving money on your taxes. And, the money in your plan earns interest that is tax free.
In addition, any money you take out of your Aetna HSA plans to pay for your medical care is not taxed. This becomes the third leg of a powerful tax benefit program that also provides health care insurance.
You own your HSA which means should you change jobs or health insurance plans, the money in your account is yours to keep. If at the end of the year you have a balance in your account you haven't used, you can roll over the balance for use in the new year. You can do this for as long as you own the plan.
The list of qualified medical expenses is quite extensive. They include:
- Dedcutible payments
- Your share of doctor and hospital bills
- Prescription and some over the counter drugs
- Diagnostic services not covered by your insurance plan
- Wheelchairs
- Dental care and braces
- Hearing aids
- Contact lenses and LASIK surgery
- Organ transplants
- Health premiums if you are unemployed
Setting up an Aetna HSA plan is almost automatic. You simply complete a regular health insurance application, submit it, and Aetna does the rest. Aetna will underwrite your application and if you are accepted, they will mail you everything you need to enroll into the HSA. It is surprisingly simple and quick.
Once you are accepted and deposit funds into your HSA, they become available for use at that very moment. That means your deposit starts earning interest tax free and your account grows over time. You are not required to keep a minimum balance to earn interest as you are credited interest from the first dollar.
Your contract will contain a complete explanation of the plan, detail by detail. This article was for information purposes only for those people who might be considering an HSA. If you are one of those people and like the idea of tax free dollars growing tax free while, at the same time, providing your medical insurance coverage, an HSA is probably right for you.
