Nevada Medicare

Nevada medicare doesn't actually exist. Medicare is a federal program with the same guidelines in every state. The term "Nevada Medicare" may reference supplements and advantage plans , but we'll talk about those later.

Medicare is a federal health insurance program for:

  • People age 65 or older.
  • People under age 65 with certain disabilities.
  • People of all ages with End-Stage Renal Disease (permanent kidney failure requiring dialysis or a transplant).
Medicare originally had only two parts:
  1. Part A (Hospital Insurance) Most people don't have to pay for Part A.
  2. Part B (Medical Insurance) Most people pay monthly for Part B.

Congress added Part C -commonly called Medicare Advantage - and Part D - commonly called Prescription Drug Coverage - in subsequent years. Both parts expanded the scope of Medicare.

Part A and Part B are referred to as Original Medicare. This is a fee-for-service plan that covers many health care services and certain drugs. You can go to any doctor or hospital that accepts Medicare.

Now for the part that "Nevada Medicare" refers to. You can chose between a Nevada Medicare supplement policy or medicare advantage plan. These two products are actually insurance policies.

Most Medicare beneficiaries will continue to pay the same $96.40 Part B premium amount in 2010. Beneficiaries who currently have the Social Security Administration (SSA) withhold their Part B premium and have incomes of $85,000 or less (or $170,000 or less for joint filers) will not have an increase in their Part B premium for 2010.

For all others, the standard Medicare Part B monthly premium will be $110.50 in 2010, which is a 15% increase over the 2009 premium. The Medicare Part B premium is increasing in 2010 due to possible increases in Part B costs. If your income is above $85,000 (single) or $170,000 (married couple), then your Medicare Part B premium may be higher than $110.50 per month.

The Original Medicare Plan pays for many health care services and supplies, but it doesn't pay all of your health care costs. There are costs that you must pay, like coinsurance, copayments, and deductibles. These costs are called "gaps" in Medicare coverage.

Most people get Part A automatically when they turn age 65. They don't have to pay a monthly payment called a premium for Part A because they or a spouse paid Medicare taxes while they were working.

If you don't automatically get premium-free Part A, you may be able to buy it if you (or your spouse) aren't entitled to Social Security because you didn't work or didn't pay enough Medicare taxes while you worked and you are age 65 or older, or you are disabled but no longer get premium-free Part A because you returned to work.

Enrolling in Part B is your choice. You can sign up for Part B anytime during a 7-month period that begins 3 months before you turn 65. Please call Social Security at 1-800-772-1213 or visit or call your local Social Security office to sign up.

If you choose to have Part B, the premium is usually taken out of your monthly Social Security, Railroad Retirement, or Civil Service Retirement payment. If you don’t get any of the above payments, Medicare sends you a bill for your Part B premium every 3 months. You should get your Medicare premium bill by the 10th of the month. If you don’t get your bill by the 10th, call Social Security at 1-800-772-1213. If you get benefits from the Railroad Retirement Board, call your local RRB office or 1-877-772-5772.
